10 projects that demonstrate TECTON’s versatility

From continuous row to system solution:

From its beginnings as a continuous row with fluorescent lamps, TECTON has been developed into a system that combines general lighting, safety and emergency lighting and lighting controls, sensors and IoT components in a single, integrated solution. Over the past 20 years, TECTON has been reinvented again and again, and the technology it is based on has been developed and refined to meet market requirements. The Zumtobel continuous-row lighting system has also gone from being solely used for industrial applications to becoming a versatile lighting tool for almost all sectors. While some products might claim to be future-proof as marketing spin, for TECTON this is the reality.

Three factors behind the success of continuous-row lighting systems

“TECTON has grown with the requirements placed on it”, says Klaus Vamberszky. The Vice President of Central Product Lifecycle Management & R&D at Zumtobel notes that the “continuous row” product category has also grown significantly over the last few years. Vamberszky sees three key reasons for this success:

  1. Strong growth in application areas: There is significant demand for continuous rows from the logistics sector and from data centres, retailers and supermarkets in particular.
  2. Increasing competition: The market is dynamic, and major customers in particular need continuous rows in order to be successful. This has motivated the sector to update and expand their portfolios.
  3. Sustainability as a mega-trend: With its integrated 11-terminal current-conducting section, the TECTON track offers a large number of interfaces for future applications. The flexibility to replace the luminaires while retaining the same track saves resources and reduces carbon emissions. “The infrastructure, i.e. the track, can remain in use for years or even decades”, says Klaus Vamberszky. “There is no other lighting solution that supports flexible changes, adaptation and new possibilities as well as a continuous-row lighting system.”

From manufacturing plants to offices and supermarkets

TECTON’s versatility comes into play in a wide range of industries. In retail, TECTON continuous-row lighting systems transform shopping into an experience: beacons in the lighting infrastructure transmit location and motion data, making applications such as indoor navigation or personalised offers possible. Shop managers benefit from information about customer movements, allowing them to optimise their store layout.

An increasing number of office buildings also rely on TECTON: in New Work environments or open-plan offices in particular, customers benefit from the excellent flexibility of this continuous-row lighting system. When the office changes, the lighting changes: power tapping along the entire length of the track means that luminaires can be easily removed and then reinstalled in any position. With the help of presence detectors, businesses can identify which desks are occupied – and thus use the available space as efficiently as possible.

10 exciting TECTON projects over more than 20 years

“In the past, we used to talk about trunking, whereas we now talk about a comprehensive infrastructure solution”, explains Bernd Walser, Head of R&D Indoor at Zumtobel. “This is a completely new, holistic approach.” The versatile ways in which TECTON can be used beyond its classic industrial applications are demonstrated by 10 selected projects, which span from office and education settings to art and culture, and from retail to healthcare. Audi, Győr (HUN)
A3 and TT Coupé in their bestlight

The Audi Hungaria Motor Kft. production site is as big as a small town. It’s no wonder, then, that Zumtobel has installed 140 kilometres of the TECTON continuous-row lighting system in the production area alone. A particular benefit is the system’s broad palette of optics and reflectors as well as the compatible safety luminaires that are available. To perfectly illuminate the storage and logistics area, which stands at a height of 18 metres, TECTON SH reflectors with an extremely narrow-beam light distribution were used. The cleanroom requirements in the laboratory were fulfilled by the TECTON IP50 luminaires used there. In addition, a TECTON laser cabin luminaire with IP50 protection was also installed as a special luminaire. One continuous-row lighting system, many possibilities.

Bauhaus Museum, Dessau (DE)

Linear light supports clean architectural forms

The Bauhaus Museum in Dessau was opened in 2019 and houses some 49,000 artefacts. Here, the TECTON continuous-row lighting system was used to create a flexible and linear basic structure that can take care of a wide range of lighting tasks – including special electrical engineering solutions. On the ground floor, linear light inserts provide diffused and democratic light. In individual areas, spotlights supplement the continuous-row lighting system, creating accents and supporting orientation.

Volvo Group Trucks, Gent (BE)

Person-centred light supports shift work

Industrial shift work can wreak havoc on people’s circadian rhythm, leading to sleep problems. Volvo Group Trucks Belgium wanted to address this issue head on, and their collaboration with Zumtobel and research partners highlights the positive effects of Human Centric Lighting (HCL): three different lighting scenarios based on the TECTON continuous-row lighting system were compared at Volvo Group Trucks’ factory premises in Ghent. To achieve a vertical illuminance of more than 1,000 lux and thus create the effect of melanopic light, Zumtobel installed two light lines with TECTON C standard LED luminaires – as well as an additional third light line. This consists of a special version of the TECTON Basic with a reflector, and sends the light back into the production facilities. The result? Employees working under Human Centric Lighting conditions were significantly more alert and focussed, and demonstrated measurably improved sleep efficiency and sleep onset latency.

Typico GmbH, Lochau (AT)

High-quality printed products, high-quality light

Typico GmbH is a specialist in textile communications and visual marketing and takes its commitment to sustainability and the environment very seriously. For this reason, the company wanted to retrofit its Passive-House-standard building with contemporary, energy-efficient LED lighting. In the production area, Zumtobel removed more than 670 existing luminaires from an area spanning 8,000 m2 and replaced them with 420 luminaires with state-of-the-art LED technology. The TECTON Basic continuous rows used in the printing area and the TECTON C continuous rows used for high ceilings create a new visual sensation in the two production areas. High colour rendering and fidelity, light with a natural feel, and optimised contrasts make it possible to accurately assess the quality of premium printed products and textiles.

Schweizerische Post, Härkingen (CH)

Perfect light for challenging visual tasks

Sorting letters, post and consignments by hand takes a lot of concentration and requires optimal visual conditions. For the sorting office of the Schweizerische Post in Härkingen, Zumtobel combined a modern LED lighting solution with sensor technology. Because a large number of TECTON tracks had already been installed, Zumtobel could simply replace the existing T16 fluorescent tubes with state-of-the-art LEDs. The key factor here is the flexibility of the lighting concept: individual areas have 200 lx lighting, while others have up to 1,500 lx illuminance.
